Dark Night of the Soul Mentoring and Coaching

When one enters the cave there is always darkness before the dawn,, but rest assured, there is always the dawning of a new day!

There can be times in our life when we just don’t know where to turn or even which way is up and all we need is someone with an understanding ear, someone who has trod through the same darkness, someone just to be there for us when we feel all is lost.

The dark night experience is one of isolation, of moving from darkness within, to that of light. It can feel desolate, confusing and sometimes quite desperate, even if we know we are in it. It is a journey into the blackness, like being sucked into a black hole, with all the light snuffed out.

It is a crisis evoked by the soul in response to our aspiration for spiritual growth, for more light, for illumination. But it does not feel like that at all. It feels bleak.

Before the light can shine from within, it must first shine light into the dark recesses of our hearts and minds, to crack the shell of the prison house we have long called home. Our over identification with of an exterior world, our separate self existence, our wonder with the world of phenomena, holding on to the material realm, clinging to our fears, dramas and delusions… these are our prison house, these are our limitations, these are the things that really hold us back… and these are the things that must go!

But letting go is the hard part. If it were easy we would have done so long ago, for we have aspired for growth for many a long year, but alas it has eluded us… or has it?

Remember that the dark night of the soul is in response to an invocation, to our desire for more light… it is responding… just not in the way we thought it would or should respond.

Growth is occurring! Soul light is pouring in.

In order for that light to shine, it must first shatter our illusions, reveal our fears, show us our selfishness, our delusions and the fallacy of our limiting thoughts, then and only then can the crack off light shine and take the place of darkness. Then and only then can the full light of day begin to reveal itself within our hearts and minds, for the benefit of all mankind.

The dark night of the soul will reveal the parts of us that live for the separated self and lead us towards the cultivation of love for all beings.

What is Business Coaching

Business or corporate coaching is a branch of life coaching that caters to the needs of small businesses, sole proprietors or micro businesses, medium and large businesses or organisations.

Sometimes the owners, directors or leaders of a business may want clarity, direction or skills development or there may be a need for a small group of salespersons, executives or office staff that my need may need to up-skill or need direction, focus or guidance on issues affecting the company. A business coach may be a speaker at events, with the purposes of motivation. such as a meetings, corporate functions or retreats.

What happens in Business Coaching

Business coaching runs the gamut from business reviews, strategic development, goal setting and implementation, motivation, communication enhancement, process and systems improvement, stress management, or in-service staff self-development.

Business Coaching is highly customised to the needs of the specific business and consultation is required to ascertain the needs of each business.

How much does it cost?

Coaching fees associated with the business coaching process are variable and customised dependant on the specific need of the specific business. Sessions may run from one hour, to half a day, to a full day or over a series or program.

What are the Benefits of Coaching?

Benefits may include business growth, improved policies, improved efficiency, improved morale, more loyalty from employees and customers, product improvement and a variety of many other benefits but essentially business coaching benefits are obvious and as diverse as the business world itself.

Am I Creative?

I have never been artistic, how could I be creative?

Everyone is creative, everyone is constantly creating, the question is are you consciously creating? Creativity is not something we do, it is something we are! It is our birthright. But are we consciously accessing our creative storehouse.

We all have the ability to create something our heart desires, we also all have within us the ability to be artistic, if we chose to explore that avenue. Not everyone wants to be artistic, but everyone of us is intrinsically creative.

How do you express your creativity?

How creative would you like to be?

Many of people know the challenge of not expressing something that is pressing to be communicated. For some that may be an artwork, others it may be a book, for others it may be a business idea or an invention.

Is there something within you that you have not yet tapped into but know it is there?

Could you benefit from knowing how to consciously go about creating?

Do clients in the corporate world differ from other clients?

The focus in the corporate world is particular but human needs are human needs. We all have a life and coaching helps us with that and in the corporate world, the organisation and job issues must be incorporated in the coaching mix.

Works often gives us a sense of purpose, identity and value as well as a sense of security, so it is an important part of life and must be considered. It is a part of it but not all of it, though at times is may feel like it.

Having worked as a CEO and then later coaching and training Executives, I understand the needs of those working with the corporate world and that it can be all consuming at times, as there are certain demands placed upon them, as well as the challenges they face in trying to balance the whole of their lives. This is one of the big challenges.

What is the creative element we tap into?

There is an inner creative storehouse dwelling within each of us, a vast power that needs to express itself. This creative element can foster a new vision and a new approach to life experience and expression, one which portrays wonder, beauty and possibility in our everyday life and puts you firmly in the driver’s seat.

It can be expressed in a life lived, a book written, a picture painted, a home functioning rhythmically, a business running along sound and true lines, a life salvaged, a challenge traversed, any visioned piece of work carried out with precision.

What are the primary impediments to creativity?

1. Not enough time – we often think we are far too busy for creative endeavours, or that it’s time wasting or its day dreaming.

2. Wrong value of our creative faculty – placing greater value on our logical thinking mode and not really giving creativity a place.

That’s not my job;

Creativity is play and play is not work

Being a “serious” person

3. Discomfort of ‘being spatial’ rather than ‘thinking logically’ –

Trying to find the “right” answer

Following rules

Being overly practical and structured

Our logical left brain likes to be in control, here again we have to look at the choosing both rather than one way

4. Risk aversion – Some people like to avoid ambiguity, and creativity is often termed as vague or day-dreamy and some consider being wrong is bad so it is not a ‘good’ space for them to be in, however in the creative space, here is no wrong or wrong, good or bad.

5. Self belief – I’m not creative or the creativity killer of comparing yourself to others – I’m not good at art etc.

What are the most common obstacles to overcome in coaching?

This is as varied as the people who have coaching themselves, but underneath most obstacles

is fear of some kind,

or a lack of self belief,

while you may want ‘it’, (whatever it is) underneath you don’t really believe you can really have ‘it’ for some or other reason.

Next comes confusion or a lack of clarity and know-how, knowing how to go about achieving what it is you want to achieve.

Moving through limiting mindsets and holding onto the past all play their part in creating crafting your future.

Listening well is crucial, the ability to communicate, to build rapport, to motivate and inspire are all vitally important, so is the ability to challenge the status quo with strength and compassion.

As all people are different, an individual approach and a wholistic view of life is needed, so is the ability to be flexible in order to react to people’s particular needs. Curiosity and sincere interest to understand fundamental issues in people’s lives are foundational for all life coaches.

Coaching focuses more on the present and future, rather than the past. It is about accessing potentialities and possibilities, then moving through blocks or obstacles, rather than healing deep seated emotional issues. Emotions may come up during the period of your coaching – and you will learn more and develop yourself in the process, but coaching primarily focuses on helping you achieve specific goals through taking actions and developing positive behaviours, rather than on healing psychological issues.

Mentoring

A Mentor guides you based on their own experience.

A mentor is usually older and wiser; they have “been there and done that” and you can benefit from their previous experience.

A relationship with a Mentor is a power-free

It is two-way mutually beneficial relationship

Mentors are facilitators and teachers allowing you to discover you own direction

“My Mentor let me struggle so that I may learn for myself”, sometimes that can be frustrating, but it makes the learning really mine!!”

A mentor’s influence is proportionate to the perceive value they can bring to the relationship. It is a power free relationship based on mutual respect and value for you both.

Coaching

A coach tends to work more of a set agenda, there help you identify and change skills, clarify objectives, to identify and reinforce behaviours in line with your defined goals. A relationship with a coach usually has an objective or goals for each discussion.

A coach, is not necessarily a subject matter expert, but is expert in the process of coaching; asking the right questions and challenging you to achieve your highest potential.

In this relationship the coach also has an implied or actual level of authority by nature of their position and the agreements you have with your coach, ultimately the coach holds you accountable and can insist on compliance.
